Send a simple text message to the Stray Star GPS Tracker to get a live location whenever you need one – clicking on the instant reply text will take you straight to the location on Google Maps.
You will see an actual satellite view of the location - which makes it easier to locate the person if in a more rural area.
Other relatives or carers (or even the police if involved in an urgent search) can also text the tracker's number for a location. This is useful if outside help is needed - they don't need to be set up beforehand.

The Stray Star GPS Dementia Tracker can make and receive two way calls via the onboard microphone and speaker.
Calling The Tracker

Flexible Variables
You can set via text:
- Whether calls are answered automatically without a prior ringtone (default setting), or with a brief ringtone
- Whether calls are answered automatically (default setting) or require a press of the SOS button
- The speaker volume (set to 70% by default)
- Whether any number can call the device (set by default) or only numbers which have been set up to receive alerts (up to five carers)
Calling Out From The Stray Star Tracker
The button on the side of the Stray Star GPS Dementia Tracker will call the first carer's phone number (up to five carer numbers can be set) – or, the number can be left blank if you want to prevent this (a person with dementia, Alzheimer's or elderly may not be capable nor inclined to use this optional function). The speaker and microphone then allow two-way communication just like a mobile phone. The speaker volume is set to 70% by default, but can be increased to 100% via a text message. The Tracker wearer can hang up the call by pressing the SOS button.
Functions that Trigger Automatic Call-Outs
If there are numbers set to receive SOS Alerts, then they will be called in turn if the SOS button is pressed - until someone answers (answerphones will allow the call sequence to continue). The Fall Alert function can optionally also be set to call the alert numbers if triggered - but you can also set this function to only text instead.
Remote Listening
A function can be set via text message, that makes the Stray Star Dementia Tracker answer calls with only the on-board microphone enabled. This allows the carer to listen to the surroundings, for example to check on the whereabouts of the person, without risking confusing them with any sounds emerging from the device.

With a simple text command, you set a radius from wherever the tracker happens to be when the function is set (e.g. at the person’s home). If the Stray Star Tracker then strays beyond that set limit, then an alert warning text is sent to up to five carer's phone numbers.
This safety feature is called geo-fencing. You can also set the geo-fence to alert you if it goes into the area, rather than out of it. So if the person wanders to a place that’s dangerous or unwanted in some way – then you can set a function whilst they are there that will tell you if they go back there.
When a geo-fence is breached, a single alert will be sent to the alert numbers (up to five), which includes the location link. When the person then returns back into the safezone, the geo-fence automatically starts again. So if they stray too far again, you’ll get the alert again - you don't need to keep resetting the function.
Up to three different geofences are able to be set simultaneously, with up to five different carers being alerted if any are breached.
Note: Geofences need to be a minimum of 100 metres. This is because overnight when the tracker is indoors, the signal accuracy can reduce as satellites go out of and into view again. Less than 100 metres can cause false alarms. Geo-fencing can’t be used to know if someone has walked through their front door for example. However, in good conditions or when outdoors, the GPS accuracy is within a metre – and the Stray Star GPS Dementia Tracker is particularly accurate.
Geofences via Online (App Based) Tracking
If you set up optional online tracking (where you can see the location at all times via an app), then you can also set a visual geofence on the map, by positioning a circle. If the tracker then exits or enters a circular zone, it will 'ping' on the app to let you know. This is an alternative to text based alerts, so will save your Pay As You Go credit.
The person can press the SOS button to alert carers if lost, confused, or in any trouble.

It not cancelled, it will then automatically text any carer's phone numbers set to receive alert texts (up to five carers) with "Help me!", the time, and location link.
At the same time, it will say "Calling contact number one". It will then call the alert numbers, in turn, until someone answers for a two-way conversation. The carer should know to expect a call, because they will have already just received the text alert moments before.
When calling the carers in turn, the device will call for about three rings before moving the next carer's phone number. This is to try and avoid voicemail answering.
If a call is answered (either by a person or voicemail) then the call length is set to 2 minutes. If the person can't help (or a voicemail answers) then the device will automatically disconnect and call the next number in the sequence. If the person can help, then they have the option of cancelling the remaining call sequence (the remaining carer's won't need to be called). This is all calibrated to ensure the optimum chance of someone being able to answer and offer reassurance - but you can set these variables to suit your situation and preferences.
Flexible variables
By text (i.e. remotely, anywhere in the country), you can vary:
- The carer's phone numbers (up to five can be set)
- Whether they are to receive text alerts, phone calls, or both
- The order they're in (deciding the order in which they're called)
- How long the device calls for before cancelling and calling the next person (to avoid voicemail, default is about five seconds)
- How long the device remains in an answered call for before calling the next person (default is 2 minutes, which should be enough to arrange help - if not, having cancelled the remaining call sequence you can always call the tracker back)
- How long the SOS button needs to be pressed for before activating the alert texts and calls (default is two seconds, can be extended to reduce false presses)
- Whether the SOS button is active (it might be useful to disable if the person won't remember its functionality).
The SOS button can be disabled without losing other alerts
An elderly person with dementia or Alzheimer's may not be capable or inclined to use this function – if that's the case then the SOS button can be disabled on the dementia tracker without losing other alert functionality (e.g. geofence, fall or low battery alerts).

If the wearer is at risk of falling (e.g. elderly or at risk of stroke), then this function will be essential. It can be set with a varying level of sensitivity to detect a fall, and is active by default.
If the dementia tracker detects an impact, it will say "Fall alert has been activated. Click the SOS button if you wish to cancel", offering a brief opportunity during which the wearer can cancel the alarm with a button press (to prevent false-alarms). If they don’t cancel the alarm, an alert text and call will be sent to up to five carer's phone numbers.
Flexible Variables
You can set variables via text, remotely:
- Whether fall detection is active (is active by default, with medium sensitivity)
- Whether fall detection sends just text alerts, calls, or both (set to text and call by default)
The variables are then similar as to the SOS function, where you can set:
- The carer's phone numbers (up to five can be set)
- Whether they are to receive text alerts, phone calls, or both
- The order they're in (deciding the order in which they're called)
- How long the device calls for before cancelling and calling the next person (to avoid voicemail, default is about five seconds)
- How long the device remains in an answered call for before calling the next person (default is 2 minutes, which should be enough to arrange help - if not, having cancelled the remaining call sequence you can always call the tracker back)
Log into a website (or app) to see the live location of the GPS Dementia Tracker as it moves - and where it's been.
The Stray Star GPS Tracker can continually upload its location to tracking platform which you can log into via a webpage or app (Android & iPhone) – allowing you to see its live location. It can also be useful to see the recent route history, so see the path the person takes if they go wandering. We provide a step-by-step guide with the GPS Tracker on how to get set up for online tracking, and it takes just a few minutes. Some customers find this easier than texting the GPS tracker for a location. You can share your login info with anyone else who might want to use the online tracking (relatives or carers).
Free to set up and use - only pay approx 50p per month for data costs from your Pay As You Go SIM
If you choose to have a free SIM pre-installed in your device, then it only costs about 50p per month for data use from your pay-as-you-go credit (or included in the £6pm unlimited texts-calls-data goodybag).
"The tracker worked well yesterday, locating my wife when she got seriously lost. Many Thanks."
The inbuilt rechargeable battery has a number of modes, which can be selected at any time via text message.
Battery level is always shown in every location and alert text received (along with the time, date and speed of motion).
Default Mode (approx 4-5 days): The GPS chip locates itself whenever the device moves (using the inbuilt motion-sensor). It can then readily provide a location when you request one via text. Because this mode means that battery usage is dependent on motion, the more the device moves, the faster the battery will drain. This is the most common mode used.
Power Save Mode (up to 10 days): The motion sensor is disabled, so the GPS chip “sleeps” until a location request is made by text. It is always available to receive your location text requests, other function-setting texts and phone calls. However, because it sleeps until you ask it for a location, it really does help for it to be outside when you locate it as it needs to get a fresh location (it hasn't been updating itself). This isn't ideal if its likely to be indoors a lot, or on transport.
Charging
![]()
The supplied USB magnetic clip-on charger (or optional magnetic charging cradle available as an add-on at checkout) takes just a few hours to restore full battery life.
![]()
When the device falls below 15% battery level, an LED will flash on the device, and will send an alert text to up to five carer's numbers.
The Stray Star GPS Tracker will be fine in rain, puddles, even the shower.
The buttons, speaker and microphone are sealed, and the magnetic charging means no micro-USB ports are exposed to the elements.
Try not to put it through a washing machine though - it may not survive the prolonged heat in combination with water.
Difficult to switch off accidentally
A problem with other GPS dementia Trackers is that they can be switched off accidentally! That won’t happen with the Stray Star GPS Dementia Tracker – you have to press the power button and SOS button together for a number of seconds to power-down the device.
Hidden SIM card
The micro-SIM card is installed inside of the device – not via an external slot.
This is extremely useful to know if you are planning to use the device for asset (theft) protection, or safeguarding children for example – because there is no way of knowing that the device is able to send/receive texts or phone calls.
Discreet LEDs if needed
The LEDs are already small and discreet, and indicate that the mobile and GPS signals are present with occasional blinks.
However, if the wearer is prone to confusion, or you wish to hide that the device is powered on (for example, asset protection), then the LEDs can be switched off (and on again) via a text message without affecting any functionality.
Disable the SOS and Call button
If the person you’re caring for is liable to press buttons on the dementia tracker accidentally, then you can disable the SOS and call button, while still receiving text alerts for low battery, geo-fencing or any other alerts you set up.
The Stray Star GPS Tracker offers reassuring voice feedback.
This can be useful to help reassure that it's been properly placed on the charging cradle (you'll hear "the device is charging"). When the SOS button is pressed, or a fall is detected, you'll hear "SOS/fall alert has been activated, click the button if you wish to cancel".
This can just offer that extra bit of friendly reassurance, for example if the wearer is visually impaired.
The voice feedback can also be deactivated.
Easy to find if it gets lost
Being quite small, and frequently used by elderly people, the Stray Star GPS Tracker could get mislaid in a house, or in a park, shrubbery or anywhere where it can't be easily found.
Don't worry. Aside from the more general location on the map, you can more accurately pinpoint it when nearby.
The 'Find Me' Feature
When you know you're nearby, you can send a simple text to make it emit a series of ten beeps, to help you locate it.
This is hugely useful to pinpoint exactly where it is - whether in a draw, behind a cushion or anywhere else nearby.
Remember, you can also always call it to speak through its onboard speaker - this can be useful to hear where it is, or talk to someone nearby.
Our Stray Star GPS Tracker is now 4G, falling back on 2G networks where 4G isn't available (e.g. more rural areas).
2G is still the better network for these types of devices - it has much better coverage across UK (especially outside of towns/cities), and the GPRS capacity is still fine for online tracking. The majority of smart-meters for example are still 2G. While 3G is already shut down in the UK, 2G will be staying for a bit longer, with the eventual shut down being 2033 at the latest.
So the Stray Star GPS Tracker has the best of both worlds - 4G where available (which will expand across the coming years), but 2G where it's needed.
"Your instructions throughout have been really simple and easy to follow."
More great benefits...
Most customers spend just £1-3 a month on SIM usage (texts and occasional calls from the Tracker).
The GPS Tracker uses a SIM card (think of it like a small mobile phone) - this is how it's able to transmit its location information to you via text or online data uploads. It also means you can have two-way conversations, or receive text alerts if the person wanders too far, has a fall, or presses the SOS button.

You can choose to add the free pre-installed SIM to your order at the shopping cart stage, after clicking buy it now.
Activating the SIM is easy - a full step-by-step guide is given on the welcome sheet with the Tracker. You will create your own online account with GiffGaff, giving you full control.
Ongoing SIM card costs
You will need to add £10 of pay as you go credit to the SIM when activating the SIM, but will also receive another £5 free credit on top - useful for initial setting up, testing etc.
Your own ongoing SIM card usage is the only thing you'll pay for after buying the device, as you would with a mobile phone. We pre-install GiffGaff SIMs as they offer great coverage, have no minimum contracts or lock-ins, and allow you to flexibly switch between Pay As You Go credit or an all-inclusive £6 per month 'Goodybag' depending on your usage. The initial £15 (£10 paid when activating, £5 free on top) normally then takes months to dwindle down.
Briefly, it costs:
- 10p each time the device sends a location or alert text
- 25p per minute for any outgoing calls (e.g. SOS)
- approx 50p per month if using online tracking (the data packets are tiny)
Texts and calls to the Stray Star GPS dementia Tracker will be included in your own mobile's minutes/texts, so won't cost anything from the Tracker's SIM credit.
There are no more ties, subscriptions, fees or charges to pay us.
You aren't locked into a contract with the SIM provider.
Setting up online tracking is free.
The Stray Star GPS Tracker works like a mini mobile phone - so long as it has a network signal (O2 with the pre-installed GiffGaff SIM), and your own phone has its usual network signal, then you can send/receive texts and phone calls from anywhere in the world.
Everything can be set up via text. So you can switch it on immediately and give to a loved one to be carried, knowing that you can add carer numbers, activate functions, or adjust variables wherever you happen to be (even if hundreds of miles away).
Share access with family, friends, neighbours or carers who might be able to help in a search.

Up to five different numbers can also be set to receive a combination of text alerts and/or emergency calls. These alerts could be for SOS, falls, geofencing or low battery. The numbers can also be a landline - so you could set up someone's landline number to only receive alert calls, but not texts.
The first (priority) carer number will also be assigned to the outgoing call button - if this side button is pressed on the device, it will then call that person.
If you set up online tracking, then anyone with the username and password to your online tracking account (free to set up and use) can log in to see the location.
The Stray Star GPS Tracker is uniquely calibrated with default settings to suit best-use when tracking someone with dementia or risk of wandering and becoming lost.
You'll need to add your own and other carer phone numbers (up to five in total) for the numbers to receive any alert texts or phone calls from the device.
But you can also send simple texts to adjust other variables. Here are some examples:
- Whether your phone number (and each additional carer) should receive just alert texts (e.g wandering, SOS, falls, low battery), just phone calls (SOS, falls), or both.
- Whether the device answers calls automatically or after a brief ringone.
- How many seconds the SOS call-out feature waits before moving to the next carer's phone number (a few seconds by default, to avoid voicemails).
- How long an SOS call lasts before calling the next carer (two minutes by default, e.g. if the first carer is unable to help - if they can help, then they can cancel the remaining call sequence).
- Activate/deactivate fall detection alerts, or wander-alerts (geofencing).
- Change the speaker volume
You also have options for how it's carried:
- Lanyard strap (around the neck like a necklace, included in the package)
- Keyring fob (included in the package)
- Neoprene velcro carry case (around an ankle or fixed to a mobility scooter, optional add-on)
- Plastic wrist band (optional add-on)
Your situation is unique.
Hopefully, you'll be able to find the right settings and choices to suit your individual needs. We often receive queries about very specific situations and advise around various pros, cons and ideas of how to use the device. We're always honest about this - our priority is ensuring best use and what 'makes sense' rather than sales.
The Stray Star GPS Tracker works with any Android or iOS/Apple phone.
It doesn't matter what network your own phone is on, or where in the country you are. So long as the area where the GPS Tracker will be used has good coverage for O2 (which the pre-installed GiffGaff SIM will use) then you'll be able to send and recieve texts and calls with the device. Your own phone can be on a different network, and hundreds of miles from the Tracker (even in a different country).
If the Tracker's area doesn't get good O2 coverage, but has a better signal with another provider (e.g. EE, Vodaphone), then you can install a SIM with a different network in the device instead.

The Stray Star GPS Dementia Tracker comes with plenty of options for easy carrying.
By default your package will include a good quality lanyard strap for wearing the device around the neck like a pendant, as well as a metal key fob for attaching to keys.
An optional ankle velcro carry pouch is available as an extra at the Shopping Cart stage for £9.99, which allows the device to be worn on an ankle or arm.

A GPS Tracker should be used as an assistive aid only - it should never be used to encourage a situation where a person could be unsafe without it.
GPS Signal
GPS signal and accuracy can occasionally reduce or be lost altogether if the device is deep indoors (e.g. an apartment block, large residential care home, shopping mall, underground carpark) or in a vehicle, surrounded by tall buildings or trees, or with stormy weather. If the signal is not available, it will usually report the last known location with the relevant time and date.
Mobile Network
As the GPS Dementia Tracker uses a SIM and relies on mobile networks to make and receive texts, there may occasionally be brief periods where the network is lost. Certain rural areas can have 'black spots' where no coverage is available - in these events, the battery will drain a lot quicker, as the device uses more power to continually search for a network signal. Local mast tower faults can also affect network signal (leading to intermittancy or loss of texts, calls and/or data). They are usually quickly repaired within hours, but on rare occasions can take days.
Battery and Power
Battery level is reported in each location text received from the device.
A charging routine should be established, whether every night or every few days, but enough to ensure that power will last until the next charge. If the device powers off, no texts, calls or data will be possible from the device. The device should sent a low battery alert to the carer numbers set to receive texts, when falling below 15% battery.
